Restaurants in Bucharest

These are some recommendations. Below you will also find some webpages with links:

Traditional food:
Caru' cu Bere
Address: Str. Stavropoleos 3-5, tel. 313 75 60.
Now owned and operated by the City Grill team, Caru' cu Bere is a century-old inn that has recently been restored to former glories after decades of state-run neglect. The murals on the walls and ceilings are stunning, the wooden paneling positively shiny and the infamous bad, disinterested service a thing of the past. A must.

Locanta Jaristea:
For a genuine taste of Romania, both food and atmosphere, then you can't do much better than Jaristea, a real part of the city's history. Super Romanian delicacies will keep you coming back for more... but be warned: you will not get a table in the evening without a prior reservation.
Address: Str. George Georgescu 50-52, tel. 335 33 38, 0721 96 19 36.

Rossetya
Address: Str. Dimitrie Bolintineanu 9, tel. 031 805 91 99, 0748 22 02 20.
Upmarket Romanian food in a charming villa conversion - and this villa dates from the 19th century - close to Piata Universitatii. For once, real money has been spent on making the place look welcoming as well as chic, and the addition of a seperate coffee room is a very classy touch. Food is good, and prices are not too bad at all.

La Mama:
It is one of the most popular restaurants in Bucharest, serving Romanian food. The name (if you didn't guess already) means Mamma's and it tries to suggest that the dishes are intended to be what a Romanian mom would cook. The food is good, nothing out of the ordinary, the regular menu that one can find in a restaurant with Romanian cuisine. But what makes this one so popular is the fact that the prices are low and the portions are big so no matter what you order it's likely you'll have a fulfilling meal :-) Because it is so popular, reservations are strongly recommended. There are four "La Mama"s spread around the city : 1. Barbu Vacarescu 3 (junction with Stefan cel Mare Blvd) Tel: 021 212 40 86 or 0723 292 863 2. Delea Veche 51 (junction with Calea Calarasi) Tel: 021 320 52 13 or 0723 292 846 3. Episcopiei 9 (close to Romanian Atheneum) Tel 021 312 97 97 or 0721 LA MAMA (52 62 62) 4. Splaiul Independentei 210 - 210B (inside Galeria Orhideea comercial center) Tel: 021 220 33 95 and 0724 505 605 I tried the Barbu Delavrancea location and the one in Episcopiei. They both had non-smoking sections, a rare occurrence in Bucharest.
# Price: less than US$10
# Comparison: less expensive than average
# Address: Str. Episcopiei 9
La Mama

Burebista:
This restaurant is located a stone's throw away from University Square, opposite the US Embassy. Named after the great Dacian ruler, Burebista serves good Romanian food with an emphasis on game and meat dishes. The theme of the restaurant is hunting so be prepared to see an interior decoration made of stuffed birds and animal skins plus the usual "Romanian restaurant ornaments", the carved wooden spoons, masks and ceramics. I can recommend "ciorba de burta" (tripe soup) and "sarmale" (cabbage stuffed with rice, meat, and herbs) they were really good. I didn't try anything excentric, but on the menu you can find things like "roast boar meatballs". You can spend a little or very much depending on what you order. Don't forget that in Romania meat is priced by 100g while the portions that they bring to the table are usually bigger (200 - 300g) so expect to pay double the sum that is written on the menu. But still I believe this restaurant is a good value. Service is courteous and efficient. They usually have live music, either a traditional band or, as I seen recently when I went there for lunch, a pianist tinkling away an international repertoire. I've only eaten here at lunch time and I didn't need a reservation. You might need one for dinner, better call the restaurant and ask. There is another Burebista restaurant in Bucharest, on Calea Mosilor 195.

Casa Oamenilor de Stiinta
Piata Lahovari 9, tel. 210 12 29, 0722 521 988, fax 210 12 84.
There's little doubt that a restaurant called the 'House of the Scientists' has an enticing feel. Popular for weddings and other forms of mass-drunken celebration, the location is central but also beautifully secluded behind a rose garden. The food is typically local (chicken, pork and stodgy vegetables) and comes is large portions for little money.

Fancy places:
La Bacha
This restaurant is situated at the Marriott hotel. Our first night, after long travel, it was nice not to have to search for a good restaurant. We ordered mezze, a large selection of Middle-eastern dishes with a heavy emphasis on garlic. Highly enjoyable!
# Theme: Middle Eastern
# Price: US$11-20
# Comparison: more expensive than average
# Address: 13 Calea Septembrie

Casa Capsa:
Established in 1852, Casa Capsa (Restaurant, Hotel, Cafe) is the symbol of the romanian high-life society. The founder, Grigore Capsa (1841-1902), introduced from the very begining the occidental standards of quality and refinement. The superb facade features old architectural style, while its interior is decorated with marble, crystal and brocade. Elegant and distinguished, the hotel has class, style and discretion. The hospitable staff and the great cuisine reflect the best local traditions.
# Price: US$21-30
# Comparison: more expensive than average
# Address: 36, Calea Victoriei, Bucharest
# Phone: +40 21 313 40 38
# Directions: Near the Army House

City Grill:
City Grill seems to raise everyday in my top favourite places to eat in Bucharest. Maybe it's the attention of the waiters, or the nice ambiance, or the quality of the food, or maybe the fact that the prices are 'down to earth'. City Grill has for now three restaurants location in Bucharest (see website below) and three or more City Cafe. The newest location is right where the old part of the city starts (from Calea Victoriei to Lipscani old street). City Grill Primaverii (Charles de Gaulle Plaza) Bd.Primaverii 3 0726 62 62 62, 021 233 98 18 City Grill Orhidea (inside the Orhideea-Carefour shopping center) Galeriile Comerciale Orhideea 0727 62 62 62, 021 318 87 18 City Grill Centrul Istoric (historic centre) Str. Lipscani 12 (colt cu Calea Victoriei) 0729 62 62 62, 021 314 24 89 My favourite dishes are: grilled chicken without bones, grilled vegetables, polenta with sour cream, Gorgonzola salad (great - don't miss this) and the tasty espresso and cappuccino.
