Volz Festschrift: Local Arrangements

Workshop on Intelligent Systems:
A Festschrift for Richard Volz

Texas A&M University, April 8-10, 2010

Local Arrangements

The workshop technical sessions will be held on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. College Station is about 90 miles northwest of Houston (1.5 hours driving from IAH, Houston's Intercontinental airport), about 110 miles east of Austin (2 hours driving from AUS, Austin's airport), and about 180 miles south of Dallas (3 hours driving from DFW, the Dallas/Fort Worth airport).

Hotel Information

Blocks of hotel rooms have been reserved for workshop attendees at the following hotels. The group rate has been negotiated for the nights of Thursday April 8 and Friday April 9, though both hotels will also offer the workshop rate for Saturday April 10 if space is available. Both hotels are located in the same area, about 1 mile from campus. They both also have free parking and hotel shuttles for transportation to/from the College Station airport and to/from campus. We will be setting up a schedule for the shuttle to correspond with the workshop schedule. Please contact us at volzfest [at] cse.tamu.edu if you have questions about or problems with the hotel reservation.

Airport Information

College Station's Easterwood airport (airport code CLL, actually on the Texas A&M campus) is serviced by Continental Connection from Houston (airport code IAH, 20 minute flight) and American Eagle from Dallas (airport code DFW, 40 minute flight).

Driving Directions and Campus Parking Information

Driving Directions to the Bright Building (Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Saturday workshop venue) from:

A pretty good interactive map of campus can be found here. There are many options for visitor parking on campus. The main parking garages are listed below. As a reminder, both of the workshop hotels will provide free shuttle service to/from campus.

On Thursday April 8, Mary and Dick Volz will host the opening reception at their home from 7-9pm. The address will be emailed to attendees - please contact us a volzfest [at] cse.tamu.edu if you need information or help arranging transportation.

On Friday April 9, the technical sessions will be at the Clayton Williams, Jr., Alumni Center and workshop attendees can park in alumni center's parking lot. Here is a map that shows the alumni center (Friday sessions), the Bright building (Saturday sessions), and parking. The mailing address (for GPS users) is:
Association of Former Students
505 George Bush Dr.
College Station, TX 77840

On Friday April 9, the banquet will be held a local restaurant, Christopher's World Grille. Since it seems many people have rented cars, we have not arranged for a bus to take people from the hotels to Christopher's - we will arrange carpools as necessary on Friday (we suggest people meet in the hotel lobbies at 6:15pm). Here is a map that shows Christopher's location.
Christopher's World Grille
5001 Boonville Road
Bryan, TX 77802

On Saturday April 10, the technical sessions will be held in the HR Bright Building, which houses the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Here is a map that shows the alumni center (Friday sessions), the Bright building (Saturday sessions), and parking. The street address for the HR Bright Building is:
H.R. Bright Building
Ross St. at Spence St.
College Station, TX 77840
The above address works on the Rand McNally site. On Saturday, workshop attendees can park in parking lots 54 or 47 without a permit, or they can park in the campus garages listed above (there will be a fee to park in the garages). Since we are starting fairly early on Saturday there should be plenty of space in the parking lots. To get to the parking lots from the hotels (on University Drive), go west on University Dr., crossing Texas Avenue, to Bizzell St. Turn left onto Bizzell St. This small map shows parking lot 54 (PA 54) and lot 47 (PA 47). The blue building is the H.R. Bright Building. To get to parking lot 54 (PA 54), continue on Bizzell and turn right onto Ross street and then left into PA 54. To get to parking lot 47 (PA 47), you follow the red arrows in the small map.
